About Miss Allen

Originally making gifts for family and friends, requests began to multiply and I would burn the midnight oil to complete commissions whilst working full time in the “corporate world”.  From these small beginnings the concept of Miss Allen makes … was born.

Miss Allen Makes Thread ShedDownsizing and retiring to Norfolk four years ago, meant that there was time to look at how my hobby might become something more.  I have been sewing since I was four, encouraged by a family of crafters, and over the years a large quantity of crafting supplies had been accumulated which resulted in the need for a Thread Shed to be built at the bottom of the cottage garden.

Moving to the borders of Suffolk and Norfolk has meant exploring new marketing opportunities, making new contacts and finding the right marketplace and customer base.  Then there was Covid-19, which resulted in all craft fairs, markets and pop-up events being cancelled.  So a website for Miss Allen makes … and an on-line shop seemed a natural progression, although this will never replace the face-to-face customer experience.

Christmas is still the mainstay of the business with new products being made developed each year heavily influenced by overseas travel, new fabrics, and exchanging ideas with other crafters especially those in New Zealand.  Stitching Christmas themed items in July seemed strange when I first began to develop my business, but it is quite normal now.  Crafting small items whilst travelling on holiday always provokes conversations and often leads to a new design being created.

Responding to customer demand has led to an expansion of seasonal gifts, and an extensive range of themed bunting especially for children. No matter what the item is, quality and attention to detail is paramount and the combination of different fabrics and embellishments guarantees a unique, one-off treasure for the home.

Commissions are special, both to the customer and to me, the maker, as it provides an opportunity to create something completely bespoke and very personal which will be treasured by the recipient. Recent commissions undertaken have included personalised wedding bunting, birthday bunting and a Welcome to a New Baby bunting.
